When you visit a doctor, the nurse will almost always include a blood pressure reading. The nurse will usually state out loud a reading such as “136 over 95″ or something along those lines. But do you really know what those numbers means? The two numbers represent systolic and diastolic pressure, and while they are important factors when it comes to analyzing your overall health, doctors at Baylor College of Medicine are saying that these numbers don’t stand alone.
When you get the reading, 120 / 80, the 120 represents systolic pressure and the 80
represents diastolic pressure. Systolic pressure is a measurement of the maximum amount of force pressure of blood being pumped out of the heart, while diastolic pressure is the minimum force of pressure generated by the heart when it is in a relaxed state. A reading of 120 / 80 is the average healthy blood pressure reading, with high blood pressure being diagnosed when the reading is 140 / 90 or higher. A prehypertension reading falls between 120 / 80 and 140 / 90, while people who have suffered from heart disease or failure, kidney disease, or has had a stroke should have a blood pressure reading under 130 / 80/. High blood pressure is a serious condition responsible for organ damaage over time that can lead to heart attacks, kidney failure, stroke, or blindness. High blood pressure is referred to as the ‘silent killer’, as there are no real symptoms, but there are some factors sometimes associated with high blood pressure, such as diabetes, family history of high blood pressure, obesity, high sodium intake, smoking, and alcoholism. For most healthy persons with elevated blood pressure levels, simple lifestyle changes such as increased exercise and an improved diet can help stabilize their blood pressure levels. There are also several natural remedies that help high blood pressure, as well as prescription medicines that doctors can suggest that can help stabalize your blood pressure readings.
